Heavily armed robbers have invaded a branch of
Wema Bank in Ibokun, Oriade Local Government
Area of Osun State, killing the bank’s guard and a
resident of the town.
Investigation by THISDAY noted that the armed
men numbering eight, stormed the bank on Tuesday
evening and carted away huge amount of money
from the bank’s vault in the operation which lasted
two hours.
Reports said the dare-devil men of the underworld
on arrival at the bank fired gunshot at a security
agent guarding the bank and also killed a resident of
the town who was passing by during the raid.
It was gathered that the robbers used dynamite to
remove the bank’s Automated Teller Machine
(ATM), which they took away after the operation.
A resident of the area who said he witnessed the
robbery operation while speaking with THISDAY
under condition of anonymity revealed that the
robbers stormed the bank around 5p.m. after the
bank had closed for the day.
The eyewitness said the robbers, after looting the
bank invaded the Ibokun Divisional Police Station,
which is a stone throw to the bank and shot
sporadically to scare away the policemen on duty.
The source noted that the policemen ran helter-
skelter for safety before the fleeing bandits zoomed
off with their loots.
Speaking on the development, the spokesperson for
the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state,
Prince Diran Odeyemi, expressed worry over the
robbery saying it was sad the attack took the life of
residents of the town.
Odeyemi, an indigene of the town blamed the
escape of the bandits on what he described as the
inability of the state government to effectively arm
the police with sufficient equipment to combat
crime.
However, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs.
Folasade Odoro, confirmed the robbery.
She said the police had commenced investigation
into the attack.
